Cover Story Plush and big are two adjectives to describe Northern Marine’s “megayachts,” built to specifications in Anacortes. Owner Bud LeMieux and general manager Scott Ramin take writer Janet O’Mara on a tour of the facilities, which include four huge warehouses where boats in various stages of construction are under way.
Feature More than 26 years in the making, Twin Bridges Marina near Anacortes is one of only a couple of giant, dry boat-storage facilities on the West Coast. Janet O’Mara visits with managing partner Bill Youngsman about a dream that, through many trials and tribulations, has finally become a reality.
One block of Old Town, Anacortes, has two watering holes, a comfy family-oriented restaurant, a brewery and a shop that sells brewers’ and vintners’ supplies. The block, between Third and Fourth streets, has been called “Brewers’ Alley” by a few of its residents, which include Rockfish Grill and Watertown Pub.
Community Report What are the three hottest topics in town? Promotion, promotion, promotion. Anacortes is setting its sights on drawing more tourism to the city of 15,000, with a new archway leading to Old Town, better signage and a variety of other revitalization projects; and, the battle between the city and the port seems to be finally at an end.
Industry Report The ongoing controversy over whether to have a design-build company plan your home or hire an architect is scrutinized. Searching for answers, Janet O’Mara speaks with leading architects, design-build adherents and some who fall on both sides of the fence. There are advantages to both, she finds.
Business Profile Heading north along Interstate 5, one can’t help noticing a colorful array of playground equipment on display off Burlington’s Andis Road. Heidi Thomas stopped by and talked to Rainbow Systems manager Eric Anderson, once co-owner of Cascade Sports in downtown Mount Vernon. His entrepreneurial spirit lives on at Rainbow Systems. |
