Brewing up the Best

Fidalgo Bay Roasting Co., a wholesale/retail coffee supplier in Mount Vernon, is gaining acceptance, not only here and in its traditional territory north of Seattle, but as far away as Florida and Maryland. Aside from all the awards they’ve earned over the last couple of years, founder Gary Sawyer and his wife, Sandra, have also brought in more talent to help run the firm, namely brothers David and Derek Evans

The partnership of Gene Tanaka and Darrell Lehmann have built a manufacturing company that dwarfs most — a factory that makes water tanks and pipes for the heavy/civil industrial construction industry. The Anacortes firm, which will gross nearly $30 million this year, custom-builds everything for huge projects in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii. Writer Janet O’Mara visited the plant.

Rick Watkins 19 years ago took a bankrupt company and turned it into one of the most respected manufacturers of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) pipes in the business. The Burlington-based company, now 25 years old, is also known for its community contributions and novel means of finding skilled workers.
