Cover Story More than a grocery store, the Skagit Valley Food Co-op has been an institution in Mount Vernon since the 1970s. It offers education, a great delicatessen with balcony dining, bulk foods, wine and cheeses, and lots of organic fruits and vegetables. Heidi Thomas talked with manager Todd Wood about all the changes there.
In our annual report, we take a look at some of the new folks in town — Haggen’s in Burlington — and the 50-year-old Thrifty Foods store nearby, as well as other players in the battle for consumer food dollars. Janet O’Mara gives us a tour of recent and impending events.

One of the newest restaurants in the valley, Market Place Bistro is operated by two of the longest restaurateurs, Barry and Brenda Harter. The Harters, who have continued the tradition of home-style cooking at Axelson’s Café in Burlington and have a catering service of their own, recently took over Mount Vernon’s CottonTree Inn restaurant, changed its name and menu, and are now building a faithful clientele. |
