POWERS TAKES THE LEAD AT FISHER & SONS
Dan Powers has been named president of Fisher & Sons’ construction division based in Burlington.
As president, he will oversee the day-to-day operations of the company’s work, which along with projects in Skagit County, includes nearly 30 projects in five states. Powers joined Fisher & Sons in 1997 and has been vice president of the division since late 2005. During his tenure at Fisher & Sons, he has managed a wide range of projects including banking, retail, cold storage and other industrial projects. He has completed several mall developments for Newman Development, the first being the Burlington Crossings. He graduated from the University of Portland with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
PIAZZA RECEIVES APPOINTMENT, FEATURED IN NATIONAL MAGAZINE
Piazza Construction owner John J. Piazza attended the 64th annual International Builders Show presented by NAHB in Orlando, Fla., where he was appointed chairman of the NAHB Commercial Builders Council. He also was featured on the winter 2008 cover of the national magazine, “Commercial Builder,” which is the “Voice of Light Commercial Construction.”
The council is comprised of 22 trustees from all over the country. While in Orlando, Piazza taught a seminar titled “Alternate Business Income for Builders.” Piazza wants the council to focus on training builders on how to create alternate income beyond what they normally do for a living.
Piazza is past president of the Skagit Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) and the Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW).
HARRIS ACHIEVES REALTOR DESIGNATION
Linda Harris, Realtor with Jean Groesbeck and Assoc. LLC and Windermere Real Estate/Anacortes Properties, has obtained her Certified Negotiation Expert (CNE) designation. Harris is the first real estate agent in Anacortes to achieve this important designation, which enables Harris to achieve the best results in all phases of the real estate transaction for clients she represents. Less than 1 percent of all agents in the United States have the CNE designation. Harris also is a Certified Residential Specialist, which is the most prestigious designation awarded by the National Association of Realtors.
NIMS LEADS LADY ORCAS PROGRAM AT WCC
Piper Nims has been named the new head women’s basketball coach for the Lady Orcas basketball program at Whatcom Community College (WCC) in Bellingham.
Nims, a WCC and Western Washington University graduate, earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation in 2005. She played basketball at WCC, completing her eligibility, and then served as an assistant coach at WCC for three consecutive seasons. This past 2007-08 season, she served as WCC’s interim head women’s basketball coach. Nims led the 2007-08 Lady Orcas to an 8-8 record in the North Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges in just her first year as head coach.
Assistant coaches Jim Freeman and Amy Visser will continue their participation in the program.

WWU PROF RESEARCHES FAMILIES IN NORTHERN IRELAND
Western Washington University Associate Professor of Sociology Mick Cunningham is researching how years of conflict in Northern Ireland has reshaped the country’s cultural perceptions of its families.
“I’m looking at how families, and the roles within those families, changed between a high-conflict period around 1994, and a low-conflict period in 2002,” Cunningham said. “More specifically, one of my papers is focused around the question of as the conflict receded, were families more or less open to an egalitarian model, with fathers doing more of the childcare and mothers working more.”
DONAHUE RECEIVES ADMINISTRATOR AWARD
Mick Donahue, vice president of Skagit Valley College’s Whidbey Island Campus, received the 2008 Administrator Award of Distinction from Phi Theta Kappa during its International Convention in Philadelphia in April.
Donahue was nominated by the Whidbey Island Campus’ Alpha Omicron Sigma Chapter and received the prestigious award in recognition of his support of Phi Theta Kappa and the opportunities that it provides to chapter members on Whidbey Island. As an award winner, he will be featured in upcoming Phi Theta Kappa publications, as well as the Community College Times.
More than 4,000 Phi Theta Kappa members, college faculty and presidents from around the nation were expected to attend the convention. Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of two-year colleges.

GALBRAITH JOINS GENERAL FAMILY DENTISTRY
Darcy R. Galbraith, DDS, has joined General Family Dentistry in Bellingham as an associate.
Dr. Galbraith will perform full-service general treatment to her patients, which includes crown and bridgework, root canals, hygiene (both periodontal and general), night guards and athletic guards, restorative work (amalgam and composite fillings), bleaching, cosmetic dentistry, extractions and implant restoration.
The Spokane native graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a ,achelor’s degree in psychology in 2001. She also attended graduate school at the University of Washington where she earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2005. After practicing family dentistry in Colorado for two years, she and her family moved to Bellingham last year.
The addition of Dr. Galbraith coincides with Dr. Marcus Fairbanks’ future expansion of his growing practice.

LEDESKY JOINS FSI ARCHITECTS
Terry LeDesky of Oak Harbor has joined the staff of FSI Architects as senior project architect. FSI Architects is a division of Fisher Companies in Burlington.
LeDesky has more than 20 years experience, including 16 years as principal architect of his own firm in Oak Harbor and project experience in community and campus master planning; commercial, health care, and church design; and adaptive reuse of historic structures. He is a graduate of Montana State University’s School of Architecture, serves as chapter president of the Northwest Washington American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He has been involved in the community by serving on the Island County Historical Review Board and was instrumental in the development of North Whidbey Skate Park.

Group learning specialist Rebecca Cors has joined the Applied Research Northwest (ARN) team, and Megan Blaney has been promoted to the position of operations coordinator.
Cors will support ARN’s expanding role in evaluating education programs and in regional efforts to build capacity for environmental protection. She has experience in social marketing, teaching, managing and improving environmental programs. For the last 15 years, she has supported environmental efforts to reduce air pollution, redevelop contaminated urban land and help state agencies work more cooperatively with businesses. She has a master’s degree in land resources management from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, as well as bachelor’s degrees in journalism and geology.
Blaney organizes the daily operations of ARN’s telephone interviewing call center, which includes workflow and data management, as well as survey deployment and data submission. She also is involved in graphics production and collaborative report writing for the company. She recently graduated from Western Washington University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology, with a focus in law, crime and deviance and social organization and inequality.

MEYERS RE-CERTIFIED AS ELDER LAW ATTORNEY
Barry M. Meyers has been re-certified as an Elder Law attorney for five years by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF).
NELF is the only agency accredited by the American Bar Association to certify lawyers in the specialty area of elder law. Meyers received his initial certification in 2003. He is the only certified elder law attorney north of Seattle.
SCHMIDT ACCEPTS NATIONAL POSITION
Robin Schmidt, former Donor Relations officer for Whatcom Hospice Foundation, has accepted the position of southwest regional director of Development Services to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).
Schmidt, who relocated to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in March, provides training and resource development assistance to clubs in eight states. She served as the director of Marketing and Development for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County from January 2003 until assuming her current role with St. Joseph Hospital in July of 2007. Prior to her arrival in Bellingham, she was the chief professional officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley in Alamosa, Colo. Her BGCA career began in Great Falls, Mont., and has spanned more than 13 years.

WWU’S GARCIA WINS AWARD
Western Washington University’s Joseph Garcia will receive the 2008 Peter J. Frost Mentoring Award by the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society (OBTS) for Management Educators during the 35th annual OBTS Teaching Conference this month at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass.
OBTS, whose society members include faculty at universities and colleges world-wide and business educators and management consultants, is dedicated to teaching and learning excellence in the organizational and management sciences. Its award recognizes an individual who shares their talent and knowledge through the mentoring of students, colleagues and associates. The selection committee said that Garcia’s longstanding generosity and dedication to students and colleagues serves as an example of high-quality mentoring.
Garcia serves as associate dean of WWU’s College of Business and Economics and is director of WWU’s College of Business and Economics Center for Excellence in Management Education. He has a doctorate in organizational and social psychology from the University of Utah.

RINGSTAD, BRODE EARN CERTIFICATION FOR APOLLO GEOPHYSICS CORP
Apollo Geophysics Corporation’s Vice President Matthew Ringstad and Project Geophysicist Lynelle Brode successfully completed the Staking University Utility Locator Certification Seminar in Las Vegas in May, allowing the business to now offer advanced, underground locating services.
The seminar’s classroom and hands-on training provided Ringstad and Brode with a mastery of locating equipment, superior troubleshooting techniques, and skills to consistently provide accurate and complete utility locating information. Apollo Geophysics, which says the certification could potentially save customers thousands of dollars, has been providing the Bellingham area with utility-locating and other non-destructive testing services for 13 years.

BOHN JOINS CORE THERAPEUTICS
Physical therapist Juliana Bohn has joined Core Therapeutics in the Fairhaven district of Bellingham.
Bohn has more than 25 years of clinical experience as a physical therapist and educator and an extensive background in sports, pelvic ring and orthopedic manual physical therapy. Additional specialties include foot orthotics, vestibular, geriatric mobility issues and dance and movement analysis.
She is a cum laude graduate of Cleveland State University, with a bachelor’s degree in science, and is currently completing her advanced certification in manual therapy through the North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy.
CORNWELL ASSUMES PRESIDENTIAL ROLE AT STEWART TITLE
Tim Cornwell began his role as president of Stewart Title’s Bellingham operations in April.
Cornwell is responsible for the overall leadership of the Whatcom County operation, with its main office located in Barkley Village, as well as the branch escrow office in Birch Bay. He studied broadcast communications at Western Washington University and has 17 years of experience in management, sales, marketing, operations and leadership and personnel oversight for both startup and established organizations throughout the local region. He also served as a co-founder of Chuckanut Cheesecake Company in Ferndale.

FELMLEY NAMED PIO FOR BELLINGHAM POLICE
Lt. Steve Felmley is the new public information officer (PIO) for the Bellingham Police Department (BPD). He replaces Lt. Flo Simon, who has been promoted to deputy chief.
Felmley is a 35-year veteran of the BPD. He has served the past two years as the patrol operations lieutenant. In April, he was assigned to lead the investigations division and served as the BPD’s PIO. He recently graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy in Quantico, Va., where he also studied media relations.
WWU PROF RECEIVES FIFTH RESEARCH GRANT
Western Washington University Professor Richard Gardner has received his fifth grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue his research in mathematics.
These five grants comprise 18 years of research and $598,182 of funding. Gardner has employed 16 WWU undergraduates during his research and has worked with colleagues in China, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain.
The NSF awarded the $207,224 grant to Gardner; he is using it to work on several projects regarding geometric tomography. Geometric tomography, a term Gardner introduced in 1990, concerns the retrieval of information about a uniform object from measurements of its sections by lines or planes or shadows on lines or planes.
Gardner has published more than 70 papers and a book titled “Geometric Tomography.”
GLACKIN EARNS BROKER DESIGNATION
Windermere Real Estate agent Jim Glackin of Mount Vernon has obtained his Associate Broker designation.
This designation is the highest level of Realtor education awarded in Washington state. An agent must complete an additional 120 hours of education in law, finance, broker management and business management in order to sit for the broker exam.
Glackin specializes in residential and commercial real estate in the Skagit Valley and is a member of the National Association of Realtors, Washington Association of Realtors, Commercial Brokers Association and North Puget Sound Association of Realtors.

Realtor Elizabeth Miller has joined Windermere Real Estate’s Mount Vernon office.
Miller has been a Realtor since 2005, and a Skagit Valley resident for the past 19 years. She specializes in residential real estate and is a member of the National Association of Realtors, Washington Association of Realtors, North Puget Sound Association of Realtors and Skagit & Island County Builders Association. She earned her certification with the Graduate Realtor Institute and is an Accredited Sellers Representative designee and At Home with Diversity council member.

WWU’S GUENTER-SCHLESINGER APPOINTED TO STATE COMMITTEE
Sue Guenter-Schlesinger, executive director of Western Washington University’s Equal Opportunity Office, has been appointed to Gov. Chris Gregoire’s Affirmative Action Policy Committee, which she will serve through 2011.
The committee advises the governor on affirmative action policies, approves affirmative action plans to meet goals and guidelines for state agencies and higher education set forth by the state Department of Personnel, reviews and evaluate reports and submit annual reports to the governor outlining the progress of the state in meetings it goals and timetables.
Guenter-Schlesinger has been at Western since 2005. She earned her doctorate in higher education administration from University of California-Los Angeles in 1979.
PERSONNEL ADDED, PROMOTED AT BUSINESS BANK
Debbie Hogue of Bellingham has been hired as vice president branch manager for the Bellingham Branch of Business Bank, and John Cruikshank has been promoted to chief lending officer.
Hogue brings 18 years of banking experience to the team, all of them with local customers in Bellingham. Most recently, she held the banking position of licensed relationship manager, helping clients with commercial lending, consumer lending, investments and insurance. She is an active member of United Way of Whatcom County, Junior Achievement, Bellingham School District PTA and March of Dimes.
Cruikshank has been with Business Bank for nearly 18 months and has more than 17 years of banking experience, including time spent as a credit risk officer, chief credit officer and loan officer. He serves as a board member for the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club and lives in Whatcom County.

Jacobs is responsible for all non-fluff bedding products and charged with identifying, proving and growing the company’s non-bedding business opportunities with the goal of diversifying the product line and greatly increasing sales potential through penetration of markets complementary and additional to the company’s prime market of small animal bedding (fluff).
He has more than 11 years of experience in the consumer goods industry, specifically in the areas of strategic planning and innovation and product development. Most recently, Jacobs served as director of Marketing with Johnson Outdoors, where he led all aspects of brand strategy for the turnaround to profitability of a $100 million division by expanding the product line and taking the brands into new market categories. Prior to Johnson Outdoors, he served as senior brand manager at Unilever Bestfoods.
His master’s degree in business administration is from Cornell University.
JEREMY BECK JOINS COUNTRYWIDE HOME LOANS
Jeremey Beck has accepted a position as a home-loan consultant for Countrywide Home Loans in Bellingham.
The Western Washington University graduate has six years of experience in residential real estate lending. He is qualified to assist clients with a full range of residential loans, including purchases, FHA and VA loans, refinances and new construction, plus a variety of reverse-mortgage products.
Beck is a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club and WWU Alumni Steering Committee and also participates in fundraisers for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Lance Armstrong Foundation.
IRION MOVES TO RE/MAX’S LYNDEN OFFICE
John Irion has moved to the Lynden office of RE/MAX Whatcom County.
Recently licensed, Irion has 20 years of marketing, public relations and sales experience and a strong background in single-family, multi-family and commercial real estate. He will focus on residential and investment properties.
