Important dates to set aside

10 Breakfast of Champions. Retail managers can learn how to keep meth use from impacting their businesses’ bottom lines from the Skagit County Meth Action Team at 7 am. at McIntyre Hall on the Skagit Valley College campus. Topics at the breakfast include: signs that meth cooks are purchasing or stealing ingredients used to produce the drug, Meth Watch introduction to the community and the impact of theft on retailers’ bottom lines.

The Meth Watch Program began in Kansas and came to Washington in 2003. Retailers can pick their level of involvement; from posting signs aimed at warning would be thieves to calling police when large quantities of ingredients are purchased.
20 Black Mountain Forestry Center Golf Tournament. The third-annual tournament starts at 1 p.m. on Friday May 20, at North Bellingham Golf Course. Four-person teams will complete in the tournament for thousands in prizes including a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a new car. The entry fee is $250 per foursome and $65 for individuals. The Black Mountain Forestry Center in Maple Falls is a nonprofit organization that promotes education about trees through its museum and programs.
24 Doing Business with the Navy 2005. The Economic Development Society of Skagit County presents this event designed to assist businesses interested in selling goods and services to the Navy from 9 a.m. to noon at the NAS Whidbey CPO Club in Oak Harbor. The event is free, but registration is required. Representatives will present information on procurement procedures, bid opportunities, and subcontracting. One-on-one networking will be available following the presentations. Co-sponsored by the Island County EDC and the Snohomish County EDC. 25 Skagit County Media Day. Community Action and the Directors of Volunteers in Agencies sponsors this event to provide an opportunity for community organizations to learn how to best provide local media outlets with newsworthy information and compelling feature material.
The workshop runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Community Room at the Family Resource Center, located at 320 Pacific Place in Mount Vernon. To RSVP call Shawn at (360) 416-7585.
26 Earn Your Worth! Breaking the Underearning Cycle. The Women’s Professional Network guest speaker for May is Mikelann Valterra, who will speak about breaking the pattern of earning less than you’re worth on May 26 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. As a financial counseling professional in private practice since 1996, Valterra has worked with hundreds of individuals, couples and small businesses to improve their relationship to money. The workshop will teach how to stop living out of control financially and learn how to work on day-to-day finances.
The breakfast and lecture is $10 for first time guests with reservations, $12 for members with reservations and $15 for members without reservations and other guests. For information or to make reservations, call (360) 650-0426.
26 Smart Women Finish Rich. Edward Jones investment representative Binnie Perper will host a free, fun, educational workshop for women, based on the best-selling book by David Bach, “Smart Women Finish Rich.”
The one-hour workshop will be held at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Bellingham at 7 p.m. on May 26.
“The workshop is designed to help women start improving the quality of their financial lives right away,” Perper said. “You’ll learn how to secure your financial future and finish ‘rich,’ and you’ll receive free ‘Smart Women Finish Rich’ worksheets to help you get organized.”

29 15th annual Boulevard Park Car Show. Best Western’s Busch Series show car, a replica of the No. 99 car driven by NASCAR star Michael Waltrip, will make an appearance during the Boulevard Park Car Show in Bellingham, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 29. The Best Western Lakeway Inn is sponsoring the car’s appearance, one of only two in the state this year.
The show, presented by the Bellingham Antique Automobile Restorers Club, is free and 250 cars at least 25 years old are expected to attend. For information on entering the show call Bob Auld at (360) 758-4117.
