Foothills Toyota donates car
Foothills Toyota in Burlington recently donated a 1998 Toyota Camry to Burlington-Edison High School’s auto technology program. The program, which helps students become certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, has previously only had older vehicles for hands-on training. The car was valued at $12,000 and had 25,000 miles.
MRC builds wheelchair ramp for museum
Six members of the Building Industry Association of Whatcom County’s Master Remodelors Council recently built a wheelchair access ramp for the American Museum of Radio and Electricity in Bellingham. Time and materials were donated by MRC members including Del Jacobson of Advent Construction Services, Inc., Charles Hudson of Hudson Remodeling, Ron and Pamela Kelley of Kitchen Tune-Up, Maerinus Van de Kamp of Landmark Enterprises, Inc. and Jon Abbott of Abbott Construction Company. Special support brackets for the project were provided by Bob McKay of the Machine Shop. The cost of the gift is estimated at approximately $10,000.
WECU helps local causes
The Whatcom Educational Credit Union’s Social Responsibility Committee announced it donated more than $4,000 to local causes in December. Sea-Mar Visions received $1,000 for new carpets and the YWCA received $1,000 to support a speaker series. Other organizations benefiting from the donations were the Human Rights Task Force, Whatcom Literary Council, Eppard Vision, The Jazz Project and Ferndale Boys and Girls Club.
NSEA receives $75,000
The Pacific Salmon Commission awarded $75,000 to the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association for Nooksack Basin Stream Habitat Restoration. The grant will fund materials, project management and contractors to support the NSEA’s Washington Conservation Corps crew’s work to improve riparian and aquatic habitat for salmon on the Nooksack and its tributaries. The funding comes from an endowment established as part of a 1999 agreement between the United States and Canada under the Pacific Salmon Treaty.
Skagit breweries raise money for ailing friend
Skagit River Brewery in Mount Vernon has joined with Far West Brewery in Redmond and Anacortes Brewery in Anacortes to brew Golden Lizard Belgian, a wheat beer inspired by an award-winning homebrew. Proceeds from sales of the beer will go to Liz Kooy as a get-well wish. Kooy, manager of the Rockfish Grill in Anacortes, is currently recovering from a recent stroke.
Golden Lizard is a version of Belgian wheat or “wit” beer and features unique spices including bitter and sweet orange peel, coriander, angelica root, cardamom, cumin seeds and grains.
The beer was inspired by a home brew that won at the Cascade Brewer’s Guild.
Funding Factory Recycling Program fundraiser
Members of the Bellingham Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals are fundraising through participation in the Funding Factory Recycling Program, which collects used cell phones and empty printing cartridges from the community and exchanges them for cash. By donating to this IAAP fundraiser, businesses help the local chapter earn funding to provide topnotch programs and events for local administrative professionals. Business donations build Skagit playground
Numerous businesses donated money that helped the Skagit Preschool and Resource Center (SPARC) build a new playground, swing and equipment shed. SPARC, which provides education and therapy services for children with disabilities and special needs, was able to build the playground thanks to donations from the Tulalip Tribes, Wal-Mart Foundation, Glaser Foundation, Pemco Foundation and the Skagit Community Foundation. Rotary Clubs from Mount Vernon, Skagit County and Mid-Day Burlington also contributed to the project. The new Burlington Home Depot donated an equipment shed and employees installed it at the preschool.
Village Books donates to Whatcom Peace and Justice Center
Village Books recent Literature Live event, featuring Europe Through the Back Door author Rick Steves, raised $1,270 for the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center.
The landmark Bellingham bookstore recently celebrated its 25-year-anniversary in historic Fairhaven and reopened in an expanded, gleaming 10,000-square-foot space. Chuck and Dee Robinson own the store.
Express Fitness and Tan raises $2,250
Express Fitness and Tan celebrated the end of their Challenge for Charity with an awards party at the Squalicum Boat House on Feb. 17. The 12-week challenge included two teams of women who lost 82 pounds while raising $2,250 for the Whatcom County Food Bank, The Birch Bay House, The Whatcom Center for Early Learning and the Womencare Shelter.
Wal-Mart raises $17,500 for United Way
Associates at the Bellingham Wal-Mart store recently pledged $17,500 to the United Way of Whatcom County.
Donations were raised with the assistance of numerous businesses and individuals in Whatcom County. The Bellingham Wal-Mart also provided a loaned executive, Stacie Huante, to assist United Way with its fundraising campaign.
“Our associates were delighted to contribute to an agency that supports so many fine organizations in our community,” said Cindy Daily, community involvement coordinator for the store.
