Camano clothing shop opens
Bonnie Z’s, a new women’s casual clothing store, has opened in Brindle’s Marketplace at the Camano Commons shopping center on Sunrise Boulevard.
Camano Island resident Bonnie Zeigler owns the shop, which specializes in fabrics and colors that fit Northwest tastes and casual travel wear. Fresh Produce, April Cornell, Bryne Walker, Cut Loose and Pure are all featured fashions at the store.
Linens ‘N Things opens in Burlington
Linens ‘N Things opened a 28,000-square-foot store at the Burlington Crossing shopping center last month. The store will be staffed by about 35 full- and part-time employees under the direction of store manager Liz Torres.
Lumber company opens in Sumas
A Vancouver, B.C.-based company has opened a lumber planing mill in Sumas. Teal Jones Lumber Services, Inc. hired its first shift of 23 workers in early march, its second shift in early April and hopes to hire a third shift by the end of the year. The 70 new jobs created will pay from $10 to $18 an hour.
The mill is running at the Port of Bellingham’s Sumas industrial site and will plane rough lumber into finished construction-grade lumber. The company’s decision to build in Sumas is based, in part, on a state tax deferral program open to companies that locate in economically depressed regions.
Counselor starts practice
Shirley Sprenger Lange has opened a new office above Tony’s Coffee in Fairhaven after a five-year sabbatical. Lange had an office in downtown Bellingham for 12 years until 2000, when she took time off to travel and spend time with family.
Lange’s practice includes counseling for women, families, couples and youth. She also works with stepparents, trauma recovery and PTSD.
New owners reopen pet hospital
Banfield The Pet Hospital has reopened under new ownership inside Petsmart on Guide Meridian.
Husband and wife veterinarians Giles and Shannon Little and veterinarian Michael Curtis bring more than 30 years experience to the business. Curtis is also a board-certified anesthesiologist.
The clinic, a full-service care hospital, is fully equipped with an in-house laboratory and pharmacy and offers radiology, dentistry and surgery in addition to routine care. Appointments are welcome but not required and office hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
New bakery in La Conner
The owners of Palmer’s on the Waterfront restaurant have opened a storefront bakery.
Danielle and Thomas Palmer opened the Bakery at Palmers on 512 S. First St. in downtown La Conner in early March. The bakery specializes in European-style baked goods such as croissants and artisan breads.
Cleaning service opens
La Conner resident Jason Byrn has opened Northwest Quality Cleaning, a new commercial and residential cleaning company.

New B & B on Silver Lake
The Mystic Inn at Silver Lake opened on March 1. Linda Dorsett and Chris Babin opened the one bedroom Bed & Breakfast overlooking Silver Lake to capitalize on an area of Whatcom County that needs more lodging.
Mystic Inn’s one bedroom is of the deluxe variety and is perfect for an outdoor enthusiast interested in skiing, fishing, hiking and boating.
Spa to open in Fairhaven
The Natural Talent Salon & Spa opened on April 1 at 1215 Old Fairhaven Parkway. Owner Julie Hiler, who has been in the hair-styling business for 15 years, will open her first business in the 1,020 square foot studio.
In addition to hair styling, the spa will offer manicures, pedicures and massages. Hiler said she has looked for the right spot for more than two years.
Bumper stickers get local
Janet Riley recently launched her new bumper sticker company BumperVerse in Bellingham.
The company makes off-the-wall bumper stickers and t-shirts, which should hit local stores next month. Riley, a photographer, will also sell her work at the farmer’s market this spring.
Retired Naval Officer opens private investigation agency in Anacortes
After 26-years in the military, retired navy officer Ed Thompson has opened the doors of a new private investigation agency in Anacortes. Summit Private Investigation Services, LLC is targeting attorneys, businesses and citizens in Whatcom, Island, Skagit and San Juan counties.
In addition to the standard investigative services like fact investigation and finding people, Thompson said he offers contract legal research for attorneys.
One of Thompson’s research projects was published in the January/February 2005 issue of PI Magazine, “The Varying Legalities of Garbology.”
Thompson’s experience includes graduation from Skagit Valley College’s paralegal program, investigating violations of military and civilian law and determining causal factors of aircraft mishaps.
Interior window company opens in Blaine
All About Window Coverings, Inc. recently opened for business in Blaine. Marsha Wahl, long-time owner of Wahl’s Drapery, and Regina Bailey, former marketing manager of the Bellingham Business Journal, have combined their talents to create the company.

New Pilates option in Anacortes
Linda McNamar recently opened Pilates, Etc. in Anacortes. McNamar offers classes at the Fidalgo Pool and Fitness Center and private instruction with Pilates equipment by appointment.
McNamar previously owned a Pilates studio in St. Petersburg, Fla. For eight years and is a licensed personal trainer. She is also certified in the Zena Rommett floorbar technique and the New York City Ballet workout.
