Thomas elected to Cascade Natural Gas board; Clapp retires

Douglas G. Thomas has been elected to the Cascade Natural Gas Board of Directors. A Bellingham resident who was raised in Burlington, he is the president and chief executive officer at Bellingham Cold Storage Company, a public refrigerated warehouse that provides freezing, storage and handling for seafood, fruit and other perishables. He replaces retiring board member Mel Clapp, who started as a labourer at Cascade 45 years ago. Clapp was elected to the Cascade Board of Directors in 1981 and retired in 1995 as the company’s chairman and chief executive officer.

 

Walker’s Healthy Pet hires Furgeson

Scott Price, president and pet nutritionist at Walker’s Healthy Pet, announced a new store location in Mount Vernon. He has hired Thia Furgeson as the newest pet consultant at the new location and at the existing Fairhaven store. Promotion, new appointment at Whatcom Business Pulse

Two professional positions at Pulse Publications, Inc. are announced by the publisher of the Whatcom County Business Pulse and Skagit County Business Monthly.

Maggie Horn has joined the company as advertising account manager for Business Monthly magazine. A veteran sales person and manager in the retail, wholesale beverage, fashion and consumer products fields, Horn attended the British Columbia Institute of Technology, with her study emphasis in sales and marketing.

A resident of LaConner, Horn is based full-time in Skagit County, working with businesses for the development of their advertising to business owners, managers and professionals.

Allan Waller joined Pulse Publications as a production staff member seven months ago from a position as digital graphics administrator at Color One in Seattle. He is a graduate in graphic design from Western Washington University.

In his promotion to the design and production managership he has been key to the new style and expansion of content in both magazines.

Haggen execs graduate from food industry management program

Derrick Anderson and Ron Johnson, executives with Haggen, Inc., have graduated from the 2002 Food Industry Management program at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business.

Anderson is a store manager, and Johnson is Haggen’s grocery, deli and self-service buyer.

The USC Food Industry Management Program is one of the most respected programs of its kind internationally. The intensive 14-week course develops management skills, leadership qualities and communications expertise in high-potential individuals.

Anderson joined Haggen in 1995 with 23 years prior experience in the food industry. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Western Washington University.

 

Atlas Chiropractic Center adds Johnson as office manager

Dr. James P. Von Hipple has added Brooke Johnson of Sedro-Woolley to his office staff at Atlas Chiropractic Center. She formerly worked at Bellingham Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Clinic. Three French Hens expands staff

Three French Hens, a home interior and gift boutique located in Fairhaven’s Finne-gan’s Alley, has added three associates – Pamela Willett, Y. Rose Torrey-Morris and Jeanie Anderson.

Willett brings more than 20 years of retail experience to the boutique, including Frederick & Nelson, Nordstroms and the Sherman Library and Botanical Gardens in Corona del Mar, California. Torrey-Morris has more than 25 years of experience in the floral industry as the former owner of Rose & Thistle in Fairhaven and The Flower and the Song in the wine country north of San Francisco. Three appointments at Whidbey Island Bank

Peggy Zoro is now senior vice president and regional manager for Widbey Island Bank for Whatcom County. She comes to the assignment with more than 30 years of banking experience in Bellingham, eastern Washington and northwestern Washington. Prior to her new appointment, Zoro held numerous senior-level banking positions, most recently as president of Key Bank’s Trans-Mountain District, headquartered in Bellingham.

Whidbey Island Bank announced two new appointments at its Bakerview branch in Bellingham – Carol Remsen as operations manager and Jolene King as a real estate loan officer. A 13-year banking veteran, Remsen was formerly with Washington Mutual Bank as a senior personal financial representative. King, with over 12 years of lending and escrow experience, will be responsible for generating commercial and residential real estate loans in Whatcom County.

Second hygienist for Ferndale dental

Kristie Mark, a lifelong Whatcom County resident, has joined the dental practice of Dr. Mike Nelson as a registered dental hygienist. She joins hygienist Patsy Goodhope on Nelson’s staff. Whatcom County honors public health volunteers

Whatcom County Health and Human Services (HHS) honored three citizen volunteers at the Fourth Annual “Public Health Heroes Awards” ceremony. They are:

- Geoff Menzies, for his work with the Drayton Harbor Shellfish Protection District and for promoting local and international cooperatives to restore marine agriculture.

- Scott Thompson, for his work with the Whatcom County Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee and for advocating physical fitness, environmental protection, safety and community development through alternative and sustainable transportation.

- John Tilley, MD, for his work with Evergreen AIDS Foundation and for bringing the Rural HIV/AIDS Primary Care Project to Whatcom County.

 

Bellingham Goodwill appoints new manager

Seattle Goodwill announced the appointment of Lainie Bolson to manager of the Bellingham Goodwill store. A native of Western Washington, Bolson has 20 years of experience in the thrift and antique industries. She previously served three years as assistant manager of the store. Taysi heads Brown & Cole real estate division

A. Faruk Taysi, AIA, has joined Brown & Cole as its chief administrator for real estate development. He will be responsible for implementing development projects, including feasibility, entitlement, design and construction. He was previously the senior vice president of real estate at Trillium Corporation in Bellingham and has 30 years in the real estate field. Taysi holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Washington State University and is a registered architect in the state of Washington. Hydrologist Ginney joins GeoEngineers

Eric Ginney has joined GeoEngineers as a hydrologist in the firm’s Bellingham office. GeoEngineers is a 200-person firm that provides consulting services for clients facing issues in environmental regulation, permitting, the Endangered Species Act and other water quality issues. Ginney has six years’ experience in watershed assessments, river-reach planning efforts and geomorphic research. He holds bachelors’ degrees in Physical Geogrpahy and Geosciences and a Master of Science degree in interdisciplinary studies and environmental geomorphology from California State University.

 

Industry women honored by county Realtors

Two women prominent in Whatcom County’s real estate industry are recipients of quarterly awards given by the county’s Association of Realtors. Mary Kaye, of RE/MAX, was named Realtor of the First Quarter. Charlotte Eastman-Pros, branch manager of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, was honored as Affiliate of the First Quarter. Both women were honored because of their support of the association’s activities and their contributions to the community.

 

Chiropractor recognized for photographic work

WWSU has new budget director

Paula Rustan has been named Western Washington University’s executive director for university planning and budgeting. Formerly with the Oregon University System (OUS), Rustan replaces Jack Cooley, who retires this month. Before accepting the WWSU appointment, Rustan was budget operations director with OUS and before that director of New Mexico’s State Budget and Administrative Service Divisions. She holds a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s College, in Santa Fe, NM, and a master’s in comparative literature from the University of Chicago.

 

New executive director for public schools

Edie Holcomb has been named executive director for School Administration for Bellingham Public Schools for the 2002-2003 school year. She will supervise half of the system’s principals. Ann Marie Hanel continues in her executive post and will supervise the remaining group of school principals. Holcomb’s position is the replacement for Dr. Greg Cowan, assistant superintendent, who retires this month after 30 years in education.

 

Art teacher honored by university

Catherine Gersich, art teacher at Fairhaven Middle School, will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from the alumni association at her alma mater, the University of Oregon. Gersich received her masters degree and teaching licensure through the University of Oregon in 1993. She is being honored for her significant impact on students and community through art.

Among her accomplishments are the development of an after-school art program for middle school students, organizing summer extension art classes and working with her students to create the Fairhaven Virtual Museum. Gersich also developed an art website that is accessed by educators across the country.

This past year she received the Mayor’s Art Award for her contributions to the arts in the community.

 

Deborah Day joins Unicom in Mount Vernon

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Walk participant honored

Burlington resident Sally Freeman has been honored for her participation in the annual Bellingham MS Walk presented by Immunex. Freeman and her family are actively involved with the National MS Society and each year form a team of volunteers and walkers for the Bellingham MS Walk. Diagnosed with MS in 1997, Freeman continues to stay active by working as much as possible and staying involved in her community. A native of Skagit Valley, she teaches Sunday school, is a substitute instructional assistant and cook in the local school district and a parent to three children.

The MS Walk is the largest fundraising event held by the Greater Washington Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The event last year raised more than $820,000 state-wide. Rick Anderson named as outstanding alumnus

Rick Anderson, president and chief operating officer of Moss Adams, LLP certified public accountants, was named the outstanding alumnus and inducted as an honorary member of the Theta Phi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi at Western Washington University.

Anderson joined Moss Adams upon graduation from WWU in 1973 and rose through the ranks to his current position in 1999.

Widbey Island Bank adds Dave Trott

Dave Trott relocates home to Bellingham to assume a position as vice president and real estate sales manager for Whidbey Island Bank in Whatcom County.

Carl Obermeier joins WWU job location program

Western Washington University’s Center for Student Work Experience retained Carl Obermeier as the job location and development outreach coordinator.

In his new federally funded assignment he will be working with the business community to find and develop job opportunities for students of the University.

Obermeier is a graduate student in the University MBA program, and holds his baccalaureate degree in Marine Transportation from California Maritime Academy.

Peoples Bank promotes Melinda Kaemingk

A life-long resident of Whatcom County and a veteran of 12 years with Peoples Bank, Melinda Kaemingk has been promoted to compliance officer. She has progressed through several assignments with the 16-office independent community bank after joining it in 1990, including financial services representative, loan processor and assistant auditor. In 1998, Kaemingk was promoted to compliance manager and administrative assistant in the deposit services department.

The new compliance officer is a graduate of Lynden Christian School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern College in Iowa.

Whatcom-based author publishes new book

Bellingham-based Tom Hunter has taken the giant step from singer, songwriter and educator to add the title of author. His new book, Build It Up and Knock It Down, is published by HarperCollins.

Build It Up is based on lines from his song of the same name and includes illustrations by James Yang.

Hunter is well known in Whatcom County for his music and educational programs and his Christmas Eve music program at the Mount Baker Theatre.

Hunter introduces Build It Up and Knock It Down in an in-person presentation at Village Books in the Fairhaven Historic District, 11 a.m., on June 1.
