BP Cherry Point Gains Abendhoff

Michael Abendhoff has been appointed manager of government and public affairs for the BP Cherry Point Refinery in Blaine.

Abendhoff is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of major external issues, along with community affairs strategies and initiatives. He is the external-affairs contact and liaison with outside regulatory, media, government, community and public agencies.

Abendhoff joined Amoco in 1988 as a marketing representative responsible for the sale of Atlas tires, batteries and accessories. Since then, he has held jobs of increasing scope and responsibility. Most recently, Abendhoff managed the U.S. rollout of the new BP convenience store brand, BP Connect, in the Indianapolis, Ind., and Cleveland markets.

He has a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and a master of business administration degree from the University of Illinois.

Wilson Speaking at WPN Meeting

Lynn Bralle Wilson, owner of Cheryl Leaf Antiques in Bellingham, will speak about marketing at the Feb. 28 meeting of the Women’s Professional Network.

Palmer & Associates Adds Burkland as Consultant

Peter Burkland has joined Bellingham-based Palmer & Associates to provide general business consulting services to clients in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Burkland has worked for IBM for the last six years and has an additional 20 years of experience in manufacturing, pharmaceutical and paper industries. He has developed business and information-technology strategies for clients in a wide variety of industries and has experience in information services, marketing, field sales, materials management and finance.

Brumet Carrying Olympic Torch

Carol Brumet, cancer outreach coordinator at the Community Cancer Center in Bellingham, was selected to carry the Olympic torch Jan. 23 as it passed through Seattle on its way to Salt Lake City for the Winter Olympics.

Brumet was nominated by volunteers who worked with her last year on the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life fundraiser in Bellingham.

“It is such an honor to be nominated by people you respect and to be chosen is quite overwhelmingly incredible,” Brumet says.

RE/MAX’s Lindberg Gains Designation

Maria Lindberg of RE/MAX Whatcom County in Bellingham has earned the designation of certified residential specialist from the Council of Residential Specialists, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors.

Lindberg specializes in the sales of residential and multi-family properties.

Realtors who receive the CRS designation have completed courses and demonstrated professional expertise in residential real estate. Only 35,000 Realtors nationwide have earned the credential.

Mooney Heading Ferndale Chamber

Linda Mooney, assistant vice president and relationship manager at KeyBank in Ferndale, has been installed president of the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce for 2002.

Mooney has worked for KeyBank since June 1999 and has been in the banking industry since 1984.

Dunlap Chairing United Way Board

Gene Dunlap, general manager of the Costco Wholesale store in Bellingham, has been elected chairman of the board of directors and chief volunteer officer for United Way of Whatcom County.

The other board officers for 2002 are: John Macpherson, senior vice president of Anvil Engineering, first vice chair; Janice Butler, community volunteer; Adrienne Hanson, a certified public accountant for Larson Gross, treasurer; Don Zimmerman, president of Bank NorthWest, assistant treasurer; and Jim Darling, executive director of the Port of Bellingham, immediate past board chair.

Kåren Larson of the Washington State Health Insurance Pool and Kåren Larson Consulting, was elected chair of the 2002 campaign. Guy Newsted, cast house manager for Alcoa Intalco Works, was named fund distribution chair.

U.S. Bank Promotes Eschliman to VP

U.S. Bank has promoted Joyce Eschliman, a small-business banking officer, to assistant vice president at its Bellingham office on Holly Street.

Eschliman has a bachelor’s degree in finance from Western Washington University and has worked for U.S. Bank since 1996.

Becker Selling Real Estate

Bob Becker has become a sales associate with the Bellingham real-estate firm of Coldwell Banker Miller-Arnason.

Becker’s business career began when he moved to Bellingham in 1970 after graduating from the University of Washington with degrees in accounting and finance. He earned a master of business administration degree from Western Washington University in 1986. Becker has experience in financial analysis, problem analysis/resolution and negotiation.

Lamont Joins Haskell Corp.

Sammie Lamont has joined Haskell Corp. in Bellingham as its business development director.

Lamont previously was a senior manager with a construction-related firm in Denver. She has an extensive background in business development with the construction and banking industries and has served in capacities up to senior vice president with two large regional construction companies in the West.

Port’s Sibold Becomes State Aviation Director

John Sibold has resigned as director of marinas and aviation for the Port of Bellingham to become the aviation director in the state Department of Transportation.

“John has done excellent work for the Port of Bellingham in a variety of roles,” says Executive Director Jim Darling. “This new career opportunity is a reflection of the level of respect the transportation industry has for John.”

After 12 years at Alaska Airlines, Sibold joined the Port of Bellingham as Squalicum Marina harbormaster in 1994. He was promoted in 1998 to aviation director and later become director of aviation and marinas.

The state of Washington includes 129 public-use airports. Sibold is responsible for coordinating airport improvements, licensing and aviation policy development.

Windermere Office Gains Associate Broker

Nanette McDowell has become an associate broker at the Bellingham office of Windermere Real Estate.

McDowell has been a licensed Realtor since 1991, beginning her real-estate career in California. She started with Windermere as a licensed assistant when she moved to Bellingham in 1995.

Rebecca Swindell has been hired as a production manager for ioCreative, the Bellingham-based advertising, design and marketing-services company.

Swindell, a graduate of Central Washington University, formerly was a project manager with MB Design in Bellingham. At ioCreative, located at 1209 N. State St., she coordinates multiple production schedules, oversees trafficking and serves as a communications liaison for project leads. Her position is a new one for the two-year-old firm, which has landed several large accounts in recent months.

Jessie Schultz, a licensed massage practitioner, has begun serving patients at two sites in Bellingham.

Palagi Chairing Literacy Council’s Trivia Bee

Lorretta Palagi, owner of Quantum Publishing Services, is chairperson of the sixth annual Trivia Bee and Silent Auction for Literacy.

Workforce Board Names Lund Associate Director

The state Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board has named Bellingham businesswoman Pam Lund its associate director for workforce development partnerships.

Lund now works closely with the state’s 12 workforce development councils, helps workforce development programs move to a skills-based system and identifies and supports opportunities to link workforce and economic development policies and initiatives.

Lund remains project director of the Eastern Washington Agriculture and Food Processing Partnership. She will continue to oversee the project through its completion in mid-2002.

Lund is owner of Momenta, Inc., a workforce development consulting firms.

The Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board is responsible for planning, coordinating and evaluation Washington state’s workfoce development system. The 11-member board represents business, labor, the state’s education, employment and training agencies and targeted populations.

Dale Vander Stelt has been named operations manager of Automated Mail Services in Blaine.

Vander Stelt previously was employed 15 years by the Lynden Tribune, where he ran presses, folders and cutters before becoming its general manager six years ago. He now oversees all production duties at AMS. Vander Stelt also will work with printers and customers to assist them in creating mail pieces that are cost-effective in the printing and mailing process.

Mall’s Marketing Staff Promoted

General Growth Properties has promoted Mary Vermillion to regional vice president of marketing for the company’s Western Business Unit and Cara Buckingham to marketing director of Bellis Fair mall in Bellingham.

Vermillion started at Bellis Fair in 1997 as assistant marketing director and soon became its marketing director. In her new position, Vermillion will continue to live and work in Bellingham while overseeing the marketing of 10 malls, including Bellis Fair.

Buckingham started at Bellis Fair as assistant marketing director in 1999, focusing on Bellis Fair’s tourism program, Food Court and special projects. Her responsibilities now include strategic planning, leasing support and advertising, promotions and special events for the shopping center.

County Realtors Present Honors

The Whatcom County Association of Realtors recently presented awards to Dan Washburn and Ken Larsen.

Washburn, broker and owner of Windermere Real Estate/Whatcom, was named Realtor of the Fourth Quarter. He was president of the association in 2000, has been a board director the past three years and is chairperson of WCAR’s fund-raising golf tournament for 2001-2002. His agency supports the Windermere Foundation, which distributes funds to various organizations that help the homeless, and Habitat for Humanity.

Larsen, vice president and residential real-estate loan manager for Peoples Bank in Bellingham, received the Affiliate of the Fourth Quarter award. He has contributed many hours to WCAR as treasurer for 2001-2002 and also is on the boards of Bellingham Technical College and St. Paul’s Episcopal School.

Northwest Computer Supplies of Bellingham has promoted Brandon Lugar to retail sales manager.

Lugar, an employee of the company since May 2000, now oversees merchandising and sales in the downtown store at 1419 Cornwall Ave.

Applied Digital Imaging Restructures Management

Applied Digital Imaging of Bellingham, celebrating its 15th anniversary this month, has restructured its management staff to form a leadership team.

Rob Takemura, promoted to vice president/general manager, is involved with the team-building aspect of the company and focuses on sales and client relationships. Tom Wallace, operations manager, now is responsible for overseeing all production and day-to-day operations. Sterling Savings Bank Adds Cutting, Stanfield

 

Sterling Savings Bank has added two executives to its Whatcom County branches.

Douglas Cutting is handling business banking from the Blaine office. He has worked 21 years in banking, including 15 years as a commercial loan officer and branch manager and the last six years as a business banker and team leader for Sterling Savings Bank.

Megan Stanfield is a private banker in the Lynden office. She previously was based in Lynden for 11 years as a vice president of client manager premier banking for Bank of America. Stanfield managed a $70 million portfolio consisting of consumer and commercial accounts and investing and lending relationships.

 

Realtors Announce Officers, Honors

Troy Muljat of The Muljat Group was installed in January as president of the Whatcom County Association of Realtors.

WCAR’s other officers for 2002 are: Mike Kent, Windermere Real Estate, vice president; Bonnie Bloch, Windermere Real Estate, secretary; Ken Larsen, Peoples Bank, treasurer; and Karen Timmer, Windermere Real Estate, past president.

WCAR directors are: Rebecca Reich and Christine Park, The Muljat Group; Jackie Ryan, John L. Scott; James Heintz, Prudential Kelstrup Realty; and Bruce Lockhart, Keller Williams Realty.

Muljat also was named the organization’s Realtor of the Year at the January banquet. He has worked in the industry for nine years and earned five educational designations. Muljat also is an educational instructor for the Washington State Association of Realtors, a state director representing Whatcom County and chair of the Communications Committee for the National Association of Realtors.

Judy Haugness, a loan officer for Peoples Bank, received the Affiliate of the Year award for her contributions to the community, the banking profession and WCAR. Haugness has 21 years of banking experience and joined Peoples Bank in 1995. She has served on numerous WCAR committees.

Sandra Wiggins of Windermere Real Estate was selected as Rookie of the Year. Before entering real estate in August 2000, Wiggins worked as a reading recovery teacher with the Lummi Nation.

David Massey of Coldwell Banker Miller-Arnason received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his successful 35-year career in real estate. He has served on numerous WCAR committees and was vice president in 1988 and president in 1989. Massey also has chaired the association’s golf tournament for many years and was a leader in getting WCAR involved in the Adopt a Highway program.

Richard Baila of RE/MAX Whatcom County was presented the P.A.L. award. He served as chair of WCAR’s Realtor Political Action Committee in 2001, raising funds so the local association could support candidates and local and statewide issue. Baila also was chair of the political affairs committee in 2000 and presides as treasurer of the Washington Association of Realtors. He was recently honored as the state’s Realtor of the Year for 2001.

Mike and Linda Rawls of Coldwell Banker Miller-Arnason were presented the Community Service Award. Both have been active WCAR members since 1977 and enjoy bowling to raise money and food for the local food bank. Mike Rawls has served as state director for WCAR. He was its vice president in 1987 and president in 1988. Rawls is a member of Bellingham Central Lions, a board director for the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center and a former director of the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

WCAR also presented its Citizen of the Year award to Dale Brandland, the county’s sheriff the past 10 years, and its Partner of the Year award to the Bellingham/Whatcom County Chamber of Commerce.

Brown, Rich Join The Fourth R

Christopher Brown and Jason Rich have joined The Fourth R of Whatcom County as technical instructors and consultants.

Brown focuses on system and database development and specializes in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and SQL Server 2000. He is leading the company’s new Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer database and programming training programs. These programs provide complete training for individuals wishing to pursue Microsoft certification or individuals wishing to learn programming and database design. Brown is a recent graduate of Western Washington University, a Microsoft Certified Professional and a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer.

Rich is a technical instructor and consultant for network architecture, design, security and administration, specializing in Windows NT/2000 servers and Exchange servers along with PC support. He is leading the company’s new CompTia A+ and Network +, Microsoft Certified System Administrator and Microsoft Certified Engineer training programs.

Rich has more than four years of experience as an information systems security officer with the Navy, network administrator experience in the investment banking industry and independent consultant. He’s earned the CompTia A+, CompTia Network+, Microsoft Certified Professional and Microsoft Certified Engineer certifications.

The Fourth R of Whatcom County is a private vocational school and information technology training center. Photographer Wins Marketing Award

 

Jeanne McGee of the Art of Photography in Bellingham was honored by a trade association for creating “Northwest Exposure,” an 18-month calendar featuring photos of local women.

The calendar was sold to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. McGee, a portrait artist, was awarded first place in the Charitable Marketing category of the AN-NE Awards, the Professional Photographers of America’s annual competition for marketing excellence. A panel of three marketing professionals from outside the association judged entries on criteria that included creativity, content and consumer appeal.

“Northwest Exposure features 12 Northwest women who were willing to “take it all off” for charity. Each of the women created their own tasteful pose, which then was capatured by McGee, who donated her expertise, time and materials to the production of the calendar.

The calendar will be displayed July 14-16 at Imaging USA, the PPA’s annual international convention in Atlantic City, N.J.

PPA has more than 14,000 members. McGee is a two-term president of the Professional Photographers of Washington.

WWU’s Becker Takes Pennsylvania Position

 

Michael Becker, director of human resources at Western Washington University since 1996, has been appointed executive deputy chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Becker assumes his new duties March 1. A national search will be conducted for the WWU position.

Becker will be the Pennsylvania system’s chief negotiator for faculty contracts. He will provide strategic leadership and administrative support in the development and implementation of special projects identified by the chancellor and board of governors. The Pennsylvania system has 14,000 faculty and 98,000 students in 14 universities.

Coldwell Banker Adds Melland to Sales Staff

 

Joe Melland has joined the sales staff of Coldwell Banker Miller-Arnason Real Estate in Bellingham.

Melland, a Bellingham native, served in the military in the mid-1960s before returning to Bellingham. He graduated from Western Washington University in 1972 with an accounting degree and has been working in accounting management.

Gordon Nugent has been hired as technical services manager for 3D Computer Corp. of Bellingham.

Nugent has 10 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. He has been a network technician with US West, operations manager for GST Telecom in Seattle and most recently was a technical design engineer for Avista Communications.

Dentist Completes Training in Procedure

 

Dr. Jeffrey Prager, owner of Bellinghamsmiles.com Dental Care, recently completed training for a teeth-whitening procedure.

The “Zoom” procedure offers “whiter teeth in about an hour,” according to the Bellingham dental practice. Members of Prager’s staff also underwent training in California.

Haggen Promotes Wahl to Merchandiser

 

Haggen, Inc., has promoted Bob Wohl to wine and beer mechandiser.

Wohl joined Haggen in 1995 as a wine specialist at the Haggen Food & Pharmacy store in Bellingham’s Barkley Village. He kept that position when he moved in 1998 to help open the Woodinville TOP Food & Drug. Wohl was promoted in wine marketing field specialist in 1999.
