Jansen Inducted into Hall of Fame Henry Jansen, who led the growth of Lynden, Inc., was inducted earlier this month in the Junior Achievement of Greater Puget Sound’s Hall of Fame. Jansen and a couple of partners bought a trucking business known as Lynden Transfer in 1947. The company pioneered in 1954 scheduled freight service to Alaska over the rugged Alcan Highway. Over the years, additional operating companies were added as Lynden expanded into air freight, barge transportation, heavy air cargo, milk and other edibles hauling, remote construction projects and logistics support for oil and mining operations. Jansen now is retired. His son Jim is chief executive officer of the company, which now has headquarters in Lynden. Another son, Guy, oversees the company’s operations in Lynden and Ferndale.
Pacific Northwest Bank Promotes Olsen to VP Judith Olsen of Bellingham has been promoted to vice president and Community Reinvestment Act officer for Pacific Northwest Bank. Olsen is responsible for administering the bank’s community reinvestment program throughout the state. This includes assessing the credit needs of communities in which the bank operates, community outreach efforts, promotion of the bank’s products and services, delivery of homebuyer education and financial literacy programs and managing the bank’s community development activities. She is based at the bank’s administrative center in Oak Harbor. Olsen has more than 25 years of experience in the financial-services industry and has worked at Pacific Northwest Bank since 1998. She attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the New York Institute of Finance. She currently is a second-year student at the Pacific Coast Banking School. Hammatt Named VP at Barkley Co. Matt Hammatt has been named a vice president at Barkley Co. in Bellingham. His primary responsibilities include advertising and marketing for the company, which owns and is developing several large-scale real-estate projects in the area. He also is handling long-range planning for the company’s interests in Bellingham’s Barkley District and specific project planning and oversight. Prior to joining Barkley Co., Hammatt practiced law in Chicago for five years. He spent three years as a litigation associate in the intellectual property department of Kirkland & Ellis, a Chicago-based national law firm, and his last two years at in-house counsel at an international advertising agency. Hammatt received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his bachelor’s degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin.
Nicholson Returns to Stewart Title Escrow officer Sandy Nicholson has returned to Stewart Title in Bellingham. Nicholson first was employed by the Bellingham office (then Charter Title) in 1992. She returned to her hometown of Lander, Wyo., in 1999 to be closer to family members and manager a branch title and escrow office there. Nicholson has more than 23 years of escrow experience. Johnson Helping Launch Seattle Press Tim Johnson, executive editor of The Every Other Weekly in Bellingham, has taken on an additional assignment as temporary editor of The Seattle Press. The Seattle Press, a Fremont-based publication serving North Seattle, was purchased by Rainier Media Group. “Seattle Press looked to The Every Other Weekly as a model for the type of paper they’d like to become,” Johnson says. “The Seattle Press has been around a long time but the new owners want to move their paper into directions similar to our own.” The new look of The Seattle Press was introduced in its Sept. 13 issue. Since 1997, The Every Other Weekly has been covering the arts and entertainment scene in northwest Washington with a publication twice each month. It is distributed at more than 320 locations in Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan counties and in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. Johnson is continuing as its executive editor. The Seattle and Bellingham newspapers are published on alternating weeks. Johnson is helping The Seattle Press hire permanent, full-time staff and eventually will become a consulting editor for it.
Holsather Managing Cingular Wireless Store Deana Holsather of Alger was named manager of the Cingular Wireless store in Bellingham, which opened in May. Holsather has been in the telephone industry for three years and has more than 20 years of retail experience. She oversees three other retail sales consultants in the store at 4291 Meridian St., Suite E-105. Sewell Managing New Bank Branch Whidbey Island Bank has appointed Todd Sewell as assistant vice president and manager of its new Bakerview Branch in Bellingham. Sewell was promoted after serving as an assistant vice president and commercial loan officer for Whidbey Island Bank in Bellingham. The Bakerview Branch, located at 2504 E. Bakerview Road at the intersection with Hannegan Road, opened in late August. Sewell has 12 years of banking experience. Lenz Elected President of Humane Society Angela Lenz, co-owner of Tails-A-Wagging Professional Pet Sitting and Doggie DayCare in Bellingham, has been elected president of the Whatcom Humane Society’s board of directors. Lenz has been a WHS member since 1997 and was elected to the board in 2000. She is a licensed animal health technician and a certified small-animal behaviorist. Personal Chef Opens County Business Lewis Machado, a personal chef, of Blaine has launched Culinary Escape. Machado brings all of the food and supplies necessary for preparing three-course meals at the homes or other sites of clients. After receiving culinary training in British Columbia, he worked at several restaurants, including the Great Blue Heron at the Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Blaine. Whitt Receives Professional Designations Dottie Whitt of Grady Financial Services in Bellingham has simultaneously earned the chartered life underwriter (CLU) and chartered financial consultant (ChFC) professional designations from The American College in Bryn Mawr, Penn. Hill Becomes County’s Youngest Realtor Jennifer Hill, 18, the youngest Realtor in Whatcom County, has joined the staff at Coldwell Banker Miller-Arnason in Bellingham. Hill is part of a team there with her father, Mike Hill. She is a graduate of Mount Baker High School and Whatcom Community College and previously worked as an escrow assistant at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in Bellingham. Mike Hill has 18 years of experience in real estate with a background that includes farming, architectural engineering and construction.
