Bowen is a first-year student in the Building and Remodeling Technology program. She plans to specialize in residential construction after graduating in June 2002. Carlson began his studies at BTC through the Running Start program and is a second-year student in its Commercial Refrigeration and HVAC program. After graduation, he plans to become a local service technician and eventually start his own business. The BTC Foundation provides scholarship to deserving BTC students. Cascade Ambulance Pair Honored The Washington Ambulance Association presented in December two of its top three annual awards to Rick Kowsky and Brad Shay of Cascade Ambulance Service, Inc. of Ferndale. Kowsky, Cascade’s president, received the Les Parkhurst Memorial Award of Excellence for his leadership in state and national funding issues. A member of the association’s executive board, Kowsky has been active in the effort to improve reimbursement for members from Medicaid and Medicare. Cascade Ambulance Service was the first recipient of this award in 1998 for outstanding service to the community. Shaw, a Cascade emergency medical technician, was presented with the EMS Professional Award. He was cited for racking down a cellular telephone caller who reported having been stung by a bee, but was confused and didn’t know his location. The call, originally received by dispatchers at British Columbia Ambulance, was forwarded to Cascade. Shay worked with local 911 dispatchers in Whatcom and Skagit counties, then talked again with British Columbia Ambulance for additional information. By tracing back the path of the call, which originally has come second-hand from a family member, Shay learned that the patient was somewhere along the Interstate 90 corridor in Eastern Washington and notified the Washington State Patrol. Troopers finally located the man at a rest area east of Spokane and aid was summoned in time to prevent serious illness.
