Hoksbergen Gains MOUS Certification

George Hoksbergen Jr., an employee at Korvan Industries in Lynden, has passed a test to earn a Microsoft Office User Specialist/ Office 2000 Master certification.

The certification indicates that Hoks-bergen has a comprehensive understanding of the Microsoft Office 2000 suite of applications, which include Access (database management), Excel (financial modeling), Outlook (e-mail and personal information manager), PowerPoint (presentations) and Word (word processing).

Hoksbergen received his training and took his certification exams at The Fourth R of Whatcom County, located at 333 Telegraph Road in Bellingham.

 

Bank Announces Promotion, Hiring

Peoples Bank has promoted Anthony Repanich to senior vice president of retail marketing and hired David Eldred as assistant vice president and marketing director.

Repanich has been with Lynden-based Peoples Bank since 1993. He was its vice president of retail sales and marketing the last three years. According to the bank’s press release, the promotion is “indicative of his increasing level of responsibility and the bank’s desire to allow him to focus his energy on advancing Peoples’ retail
banking initiatives.”

Eldred has more than 15 years of banking experience in Whatcom County. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Western Washington University and is a 1993 honors graduate of the School of Bank Marketing. He also holds a certificate in advanced database marketing from Northwestern University.

Peoples Bank, founded in 1921, operates 13 full-service offices in Whatcom and Skagit counties and has more than $350 million in assets.

 

Sizemore Receives Credit Certification

Kim Sizemore, credit manager for DeWaard & Bode, Inc. of Bellingham, recently was named a certified credit executive by the National Association of Credit Management.

Sizemore was required to pass a comprehensive, four-hour examination with essay questions covering a variety of credit, legal and management issues and a case study.

She is a board member of NACM Business Credit Services, which provides credit-information and accounts-receivable management services, collection services, industry credit groups and educational opportunities for its professional membership. She also is secretary and a founding member of the North Counties Credit and Financial Development Division, the educational branch of NACM.

 

Bowen Heads Board of Hospice Foundation

George Bowen, a senior vice president at Peoples Bank, has been named president of the Whatcom Hospice Foundation.

Founded in 1992 as the Visiting Nurse Foundation, the recent name changes reflects the foundation’s focus on raising funds specifically for hospice services in Whatcom County. It also will help the community in understanding and handling end-of-life issues.

The foundation’s other officers for 2001 are Alan Knutson, a partner at the accounting firm of Larson Gross, vice president; Carol Garguile, business manager for Bellingham Pediatric Dentistry and Dr. J. RMC Architects Adds Loghry

Karee Loghry has joined the staff of Ross McClure Cornwell Architects in Bellingham as an architectural intern with an emphasis in interior design.

Loghry has an associate of arts degree from the Art Institute of Seattle and a bachelor of arts degree from Western Washington University. She currently is working on the new Lynden Library and various residential projects for the firm.

Before joining RMC Architects, Loghry spent five years working for Northwest Architectural Co. in Seattle.

 

Rowe’s Book on Women Gains Second Publication

Bellingham author Alice Rowe announced her book — Where Have All the Smart Women Gone? – has undergone a second publication.

The book is based on her original research study of 34 Northwest women and seeks to inspire women to celebrate their gifts and talents rather than hiding them. It retails for $12.95 and is available at local bookstores and Amazon.com.

Ahl Takes Reins at Olympic Health

Debbie J. Ahl has been named president and chief executive officer of Olympic Health Management Services Inc. and Olympic Health Management Systems Inc., both with headquarters in Bellingham.

The companies specialize in the development and marketing of insurance programs related to Medicare and the processing of Medicare claims for insurance companies across the country.

Ahl has been with them since their launch in 1989, most recently serving as chief operating officer for Olympic Health Management Services. She has more than 18 years of experience in hospital and health-plan operations. Ahl graduated from Western Washington University.

Lynden Optometrist Nominated for Award

Dr. Mira Swiecicki, owner of Lynden Vision Clinic, has been nominated for a statewide award by the Mt. Baker Optometric Society.

At Home in the Garden, a book about designing garden rooms, features on the cover Turner’s springtime photograph of a wooden bench under a vine-draped pergola at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. The book has more of Turner’s photographs, most from Whatcom County private gardens, inside.

Turner’s photograph of a lacecap hydrangea is the cover image for Taylor’s Guide to Shrubs, a reference book to more than 500 ornamental shrubs for the garden. He also contributed nearly 50 of the book’s interior images.

Turner has nearly 30,000 garden photographs in his horticultural stock photography library. He photographs gardens, wilderness areas, agriculture and rural landscapes throughout the Pacific Northwest for national magazines, books and calendar publishers. Trio Takes Reins of Harborside Bistro

Peter Paulsen, owner of the Hotel Bellwether in Bellingham, has transferred ownership of its Harborside Bistro, Sunset Lounge and Compass Room to three members of the hotel’s management.

Fahri Ugurli, Michael Bode and Joe Merkling now are running those food-and-beverage operations as Harborside Hospitality Management.

Ugurli, formerly the hotel’s general manager, started in the hotel business in 1967 after graduating from college with a degree in economics. He has worked in the hospitality industry around the world with Hilton International and the Ritz Carlton Hotel Co.

Bode, most recently the director of operations for the Hotel Bellwether, started his career in food and beverage management 18 years ago in his native Germany. He has worked at five-star establishments, including the Marriott Marquis in New York and the Ritz Carlton in St. Louis, Aspen, Colo., Palm Beach, Fla., and Phoenix, Ariz.

Merkling graduated from the California Culinary Institute. He has worked for high-end organizations in San Diego, Calif., and at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua, Hawaii, as well as at the Heron Beach Inn on the coast of Washington as the executive chef.

Paulsen will oversee operations of the Hotel Bellwether while conducting a search for a hotel manager. The hotel opened in the Squalicum Harbor Marina on Aug. 4 with 67 luxury rooms and a three-story lighthouse condominium.

 

ERA Fairhaven Agents Wins Awards

Three agents at ERA Fairhaven Realty in Bellingham were honored at the annual ERA Puget Sound awards banquet Feb. 28.

David Moody, a Realtor since 1981 and with ERA Fairhaven since 1982, was named the top agent in commercial sales among ERA’s 846 agents in the Puget Sound area. Moody and Sandra Peterson, an ERA Fairhaven agent since 1996, were named the top sales team in production for 2000 and both were among the top 25 ERA agents in the region.

Sylvia Matter received the Broker Award for all-around agent excellence, including sales, community service and participation in ERA and office functions.

Hutchison, Johnson Join CVB’s Staff

The Bellingham/Whatcom County Convention & Visitors Bureau has added Lea Hutchison and Mary Johnson to its staff.

Hutchison, named the convention and membership sales coordinator, is responsible for bringing conventions and groups to the county, as well as recruiting businesses to join the CVB. She previously has worked for ARAMARK’s Lake Quinault Lodge on the Olympic Peninsula, Airporter Shuttle, Georgia-Pacific and Ludtke-Pacific Trucking.

Johnson, the CVB’s satellite coordinator, is responsible for maintaining its satellite visitor centers at Bellis Fair mall, Bellingham International Airport and the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, as well as managing the main CVB office at 904 Potter St., Bellingham, on weekends. A longtime county resident, Johnson most recently worked for the Blaine Visitor Center and has been employed at Intalco and Bellingham Frozen Foods.

 

Eiford, Elliott Join Milestone’s Staff

Janet Eiford and Michelle Elliott have joined the staff of Milestone Information Services in Bellingham.

Eiford is the firm’s marketing assistan and also majoring in communications at Western Washington University. She graduated from Sehome High School and earned an associate’s degree at Whatcom Community College.

Elliott, the new office manager, has graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in English and a psychology minor. She formerly was a writing assistant, reception supervisor and publicity coordinator at Western’s Writing Center.

 

Ayotte, Taft Hired at A.G. Edwards

John Ayotte and Toni Taft have joined the Bellingham office of A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. as financial consultants.

Ayotte previously was a financial-aid administrator at Western Washington University for five years. He is a graduate of Oregon State University and Northern Arizona University.

Taft worked for Bank of America for 20 years, most recently as a vice president and manager of its Blaine branch. She is a graduate of Western Washington University.
